This post explains why teeth can feel sensitive after starting Invisalign and what you can do about it. It can happen that you sometimes feel that your teeth are becoming extremely sensitive to certain foods. This usually happens when you eat foods that are too cold or hot, sweet, or sour.

While teeth sensitivity can sometimes be normal and could be more rampant in some individuals, you can also experience it as a side effect of getting orthodontic treatments, such as Invisalign.

First, What is Teeth Sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is a common dental problem that occurs when the protective enamel wears down or the gums recede, exposing the dentine underneath, which connects to the nerve. This can cause pain or discomfort when consuming hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks or when breathing in cold air.

There are several reasons why teeth may become sensitive. Some common causes include:

  • Tooth decay: Decay can create holes in the teeth, exposing the dentine and leading to sensitivity.
  • Gum recession: If the gums recede, the root of the tooth may be exposed, leading to sensitivity.
  • Wear and tear: Wear and tear on the teeth, such as from brushing or grinding, can cause the enamel to wear down and expose the dentine.
  • Tooth whitening: Some tooth whitening products can cause teeth to become more sensitive.
  • Brushing too hard: Brushing the teeth too hard or with a toothbrush that has hard bristles can damage the enamel and cause sensitivity.
  • Dry mouth: Saliva helps to keep the mouth moist and can help to reduce tooth sensitivity. If you have a dry mouth, your teeth may be more prone to sensitivity.
  • Diet: Consuming acidic foods and drinks can cause the enamel on the teeth to become thin, leading to sensitivity.

Can Invisalign Cause Sensitive Tooth?

Invisalign is a clear aligner system that is used to straighten teeth. In general, Invisalign aligners do not cause tooth sensitivity. However, as with any orthodontic treatment, there may be a temporary period of adjustment during which you may experience some discomfort or sensitivity.

The most common cause of tooth sensitivity during Invisalign treatment is the pressure that the aligners exert on the teeth as they move them into their proper positions. This pressure can cause the teeth to become sensitive, especially when the aligners are first being worn.

How Long Will Your Teeth Be Sensitive with Invisalign?

It is difficult to predict how long tooth sensitivity will last during Invisalign treatment as it can vary from person to person. While some people may experience mild tooth sensitivity during the first few days of the treatment as their aligners put pressure on their teeth, others may have it throughout the entire treatment process.

For most people, sensitivity during Invisalign is mild and settles within a few days. If yours persists or gets worse, contact your dentist.

Invisalign and Sensitive Tooth: What Can You Do About It?

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity during Invisalign treatment, there are a few steps you can take to manage the sensitivity. Below are a few of them:

#1: Use toothpaste for sensitive teeth

There are several toothpaste brands that are specifically formulated for sensitive teeth. These toothpaste brands contain ingredients that help to block the channels that lead to the nerves in the teeth, which can help to reduce sensitivity.

#2: Avoid acidic foods and drinks

Acidic foods and drinks can weaken the enamel on the teeth, leading to sensitivity. Try to avoid consuming these types of foods and drinks during Invisalign treatment.

#3: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush

Using a toothbrush with soft bristles can help to prevent damage to the enamel on the teeth, which can lead to sensitivity. So, it might just be the time you consider changing your toothbrush.

#4: Practice good oral hygiene

Brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and use mouthwash to help keep your mouth clean and healthy. This can help to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, which can lead to sensitivity.

It is also advisable not to brush immediately after eating acidic foods. When you know you’re going to consume something acidic or sugary, brush your teeth first and rinse your mouth with water afterwards. You can schedule a session with one of our professional hygienists for recommendations on good oral hygiene after Invisalign.

#5: Drink plenty of water

Staying hydrated can help to keep your mouth moist, which can help to reduce tooth sensitivity. Drinking plenty of water can increase saliva production and also help neutralise acid in the mouth. Both of these can help to reduce sensitivity.

#6: Use a desensitising gel

Sometimes, we may recommend using a desensitising gel to help reduce sensitivity. This gel is applied to the sensitive areas of the teeth and works to block the channels that lead to the nerves, which can help to reduce sensitivity.

#7: Take over-the-counter pain relief

If you experience pain or teeth sensitivity with Invisalign and it doesn’t seem to be going away, you may consider taking over-the-counter (OTC) medications. This will help relieve the pain during the first few days when pain and sensitivity are likely most severe.

Options include paracetamol or ibuprofen. Follow the packet instructions, and check with a pharmacist or your GP first if you take other medicines or have a medical condition.

Should I Get Invisalign If I Have Sensitive Teeth in Bradford?

Invisalign and sensitive tooth is a major concern for people who regularly experience sensitivity in their teeth. So, it is not uncommon to see such a question as ‘should I get Invisalign if I have sensitive teeth.’

Invisalign is an effective dental treatment that helps with realigning the teeth to be in a more desirable position. However, one of the side effects patients may experience with the treatment is tooth sensitivity. But this is usually mild and will usually go away in a couple of days.

If you already have sensitive teeth, Invisalign does not usually make it significantly worse, and any extra sensitivity tends to settle within the first few days of each aligner. However, in some cases, people with severe tooth sensitivity may not be suitable candidates for Invisalign treatment. If this is the case, we will discuss alternative treatment options with you.

Tell us about any tooth sensitivity or other concerns before you start Invisalign treatment. This will help us to determine the best course of treatment for you.
