Dental hygiene
Preventive care, professional cleaning and advice tailored to the health of the teeth and gums.

Could this treatment help you?
A hygiene appointment is a professional clean and a gum-health check. Plaque and hardened tartar are removed from places a toothbrush cannot reach, surface staining is polished away, and the state of your gums is recorded so any change is caught early.
Hygiene at Pearl Dental is provided by GDC-registered hygienists working alongside the dentists, so anything found that needs a dentist is passed straight over rather than left for you to arrange.
Gum health is worth taking seriously in its own right: gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and in its early stages it is painless — regular hygiene visits are how it gets caught while it is still easy to reverse.
This may suit you if

Everyone with their own teeth benefits from regular hygiene care — it is prevention, not repair. It particularly matters if your gums bleed when brushing, you have been told you have gum disease, or staining from tea, coffee or smoking is building up.
Good to know

A hygiene visit removes deposits and surface stain — it does not change the underlying shade of the teeth, which is whitening, and it does not repair damage. Gums that have been inflamed for a while can be tender after a thorough clean; it settles quickly.
Established gum disease needs more than a single visit. Where that is found, a treatment plan is made.
- Cleaning by a GDC-registered hygienist, with the gums checked and recorded
- Surface staining polished away, not just covered up
- Practical, personal advice on keeping your mouth healthy between visits
- Step 1Gum assessmentThe gums are examined and measured, so there is a record to compare against at the next visit — gum disease shows up as change over time.
- Step 2ScalingPlaque and hardened tartar are removed from above and below the gumline, including the places a toothbrush cannot reach.
- Step 3PolishSurface staining is polished away and the teeth are left smooth, which slows new deposits forming.
- Step 4Your routineYou leave with advice specific to your mouth — brushing technique, interdental cleaning and how often to come back.
Afterwards
You can eat and drink normally straight after. Gums that bleed at first usually improve within days of a clean and a better routine — bleeding that persists is worth reporting, not ignoring.

Questions patients usually ask.
How often should I see the hygienist?
It depends on your gums, not a fixed rule. Some people need a visit every three months, others every six or twelve — the interval is recommended at your appointment based on what the assessment finds.
Does a hygiene appointment hurt?
Most people find it comfortable. Gums that are already inflamed can be tender during and after a thorough clean; tell the hygienist and the approach is adjusted.
How much does it cost?
Hygiene appointments are priced per visit and the fee is confirmed when you book — before the appointment, not after it.
Will it remove the staining on my teeth?
Surface staining from tea, coffee, wine and smoking — usually yes, that is what the polish is for. Discolouration inside the tooth does not polish away; if that is what you have, whitening is discussed instead.
