Root Canal Treatment

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is undertaken to treat or prevent an infection occurring inside and around the roots of your teeth.

The infection is caused by bacteria entering the root canal system (space where your nerve is) inside your tooth. This usually causes irritation, pain and swelling. The bacteria enter the root canal system when a tooth has been damaged through extensive tooth decay, a crack in the tooth, trauma, extensive gum disease or through multiple dental procedures.

How successful is root canal treatment?

Although it is impossible to remove all of the bacteria from inside an infected tooth, if the amount can be reduced through root canal treatment then the body’s immune system can combat the residual infection.

The only other long-term alternative to root canal treatment is tooth extraction.

What can decrease the success of root canal treatment?

  • Large infection around the root tips – this reduces the success of the root canal treatment by 49%

  • Presence of a sinus tract (this is seen as a spot on the gum above an infected tooth) This is the bodies defence mechanism pushing infection out of the body, but this can also act as an extra point of entry for bacteria – this reduces the success of the root canal treatment by 48%

  • Not being able to find, shape, clean and disinfect all the root canals to the root tip (with age our root canals get narrower making them more difficult to clean).

What can increase the success of root canal treatment?

  • Using specialised instruments to help shape and clean the root canal system

  • Using Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach) and EDTA to disinfect and clean the root canal system (doubles treatment success)

  • Providing a good seal on top of the tooth through a filling or crown (11 times greater success)

  • Long term good oral hygiene and dietary habits to look after the work.

What if my root canal treatment fails?

If your root canal treatment was to fail, then treatment options would be:

  1. To do the root canal treatment again (however second time around it would have a reduced chance of success)
  2. Tooth extraction

Your root filling has the best chance of success the first time it is completed. The reported success rate of root canal treatment completed the first time round is approximately 83%. Selecting one of our upgraded options will help you to achieve this.
